X-FLARE! Big sunspot AR1520 unleashed an X1.4-class solar flare on July 12th. Because the sunspot is directly facing Earth, everything about the blast was geoeffective. For one thing, it hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) directly toward our planet. According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will hit Earth on July 14th around 10:20 UT (+/- 7 hours) and could spark strong geomagnetic storms. Sky watchers should be alert for auroras this weekend. Geomagnetic storm alerts: text, voice.

The explosion also strobed Earth with a pulse of extreme UV radiation, shown here in a movie recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

Another prediction from my list of solar watch dates proves out. So far, I've only missed one and it still occurred, only 10 days earlier than expected.

Here is this years solar storm watch date list

(For those who haven't seen this before, it was compiled in late Dec, 2011 after successfully calling the flare that October.)

Whether they produce auroras I cannot predict yet. On these days the positions for magnetodynamic symmetry distortions are favorable.

BTW... I'm still investigating the possibility of benzene from fracking in other states seeping into the Indianapolis ground water systems. It occurred to me that my life compares to Jules Verne's in that I have to do my traveling through the experiences of others. My part of the journey's are through imagination. I see why Einstein thought that imagination was far more important than knowledge.

A solar flare hitting earth on Woody's 100th Birthday seems to me like the least it could do for such an occassion!

Unfortunately it warns us that this land is truly not yours or my land...

Right about now Colorado Springs probably thinks it's what Mother Nature makes it...

There you go with your teleological thinking again. It ain't about the fires Doc, it's about how folks deal with the fires. Don't watch the doughnut, pay attention to the hole.

I prefer to see it from within the meat of the donut. We could as easily see your adage metaphorized as the watch or the hands. I prefer to see the machinery. Donuts get eaten or someone eats a donut. Few people eat watches, but a watch can eat your time and time can eat a watch.

Here's the link to today's page. They are telling us the CME is going to hit us tomorrow morning. Should be a lot of beautiful Auroras and a lot of migraines.

Ironically the place you want to be to see the auroras is NOT in the donut hole, but in the donut itself or outside the donut. More ironically, it is not the donut hole from space but what'a going on inside the donut during an aurora that is so beautiful.

Still doesn't change that we should start seeing hotter temps again. We are in extreme drought here.

Yeah?
Well it's said that outside of a dog a book is mans best friend.
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

Does that change if we wag the dog?

M-CLASS FLARE: Newly-emerging sunspot AR1532 unleashed an M2.7-class solar flare on July 27th at approximately 1726 UT. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the extreme ultraviolet flash:

The explosion does not appear to have produced a substantial CME. Even if it did, Earth is not in the line of fire. This sunspot will, however, become more geoeffective in the days ahead as it slowly turns toward Earth. Stay tuned for updates. Solar flare alerts:text, voice.

This is possibly one of two things and, since I'm considering moving to this area, I don't like thinking of either.

1. Beginning of methane geyser channels migrating South.

2. The prelude to volcanic activity.
