I saw those pics too and they were very nice. Now you have me curious. I'd like to know too. At least he didn't cut his hair real short. I just could not picture him with a real short hairdo.

It just hit me. I think he used that guitar to do a new song by his friend Hans Thessink. Hope I spelled it right. It was a blues type song so I wonder if maybe that's why he had the archtop?

I've been curious about that archtop, too...I got a good look at it at the show in Hampton, but I have no idea what it is. I checked my recording of one of the Hampton shows, and he's using it in a Hans Theesink song, "Journey On". The guitar has a bluesey bark and punch you won't get out of a Martin! Very distinctive sound.

Dunno, Cheryl. Several jazz/blues players I know favor archtops. It has a nice wide neck and archtops usually have a deep tone so could be. Based on the photo, it's a handsome axe. I guess it's electrified.

Not sure I'd want to pay his bill for strings or be changing them for all of the axes he uses live. Then there is tuning them. The life of an axeman is brutal. :)

At our age, it's a miracle to have that much hair to cut. Maybe if we beg he will share his cosmetological secrets.

He's got those mirrors and stuff for the tuning...

Gotta play those archtops the right way. I know a guy that has one that he bangs like hell, and it sounds like 2 cats F***ing in a tin garbage can.

Sue's right. That is a neat guitar tho. I suspect he is using it for the one song. I remember when Mikes cousin Nancy's first husband Gene died, they had a bagpipe player at the outdoor service. Very beautiful but sad...

Archtop Gibsons are kind of special...they have tone and sound qualities most acoustic flat tops can not produce. I have an old 1937 Gibson L37( small bodied archtop with a round sound hole) that's been rode hard and put away wet...a player's guitar, not a museum piece, and I had to put some cash into it for repairs. It has qualities and sound I can't get out of other guitars, and for some songs, exactly what's needed. When you're wailin' on Mother Maybelle songs, it's a fun guitar to play.

I have got to hear Arlo playing the archtop. I have an SS Stewart archtop that was handed down to me from my wifes grandfather. He played in a western band back in the thirties and forties. From what I was told the band he was in also did some shows with Mae West. Anyhow,if you put my SS Stewart next to a Gibson L5 they look almost exactly the same. The Gibson sounds better but the SS Stewart has a great warm sound as well and I have become very attached to the guitar. I only wish that I could of had the chance to play a few tunes with him. I tried to coax him into playing a song with me when he was alive but he wouldn't do it. It's a shame really because I guess he had a lot of tallent. From what I have learned the SS Stewart company was trying to break into the guitar making industry in the early 1900's but could not compete with Gibson. Apparently the Gibson company was making the archtops for SS Stewart for a while and I have been trying to find out if the SS Stewart that I have is one of these guitars. Maybe Mrs. G can post a clip of Arlo playing his archtop. Sure would love to hear how his archtop sounds.
