Hungry wings; their melodies   While my love awakens me

In the midst of the sunburst first light

Her hands are holding up the skies   As I hid my opened eyes

Every move just for herself    And that's so right
       A             B            E                  A
Soon I went along my way  With no words that could explain
               F#m             Bsus   B
As she began descending to the tower
    E                           A      B        C#m
Her safety now concerns me  Her circumstance to blame

Hi Folks,

This is my first post in the forum so go easy on me please :D
I was wondering if anyone knows how to play "Darkest Hour" fingerstyle as I cant figure it out from the chord sheet. I was also wondering if there is any harmonica tablature for Arlo's songs anywhere?
I managed to catch my first Arlo show in Glasgow earlier on in the year and all I can say is I hope Arlo visits Scotland again soon as it was a truly amazing night.

Cheers

On the YouTube vid, he is capoed at the 3rd fret and playing D maj forms with the low E (sixth string) tuned to D. The key is F at that capo position. He uses walking bass. A trick to this pattern is to use a G bass with a G major second position triad (fingers PIM on the second third and 4th string).

If you aren' familiar with the pattern, noodle on a D while alterating off the sixth and fourth strings with the thumb. Count 4 and if you like, tap your foot and make the thumb work with that. Play along with the track and it comes naturally.

Happy picking!

Have fun! Once you get that pattern down for that song, look around and you'll find the 'slinger uses the Drop D tuning and walking bass with that syncopation on several songs. The beauty of learning his songs is the strength of his guitar work. It is basic in the sense that these are patterns used by a lot of blues songwriters, and advanced in the economy of his fingering.

Sometimes I wish more of his videos were shot straight into the z-axis center without jump cuts. Stealin' would be sooo much easier. Maybe one day he'll produce an instructional DVD or do a solo performance just for the guitar players where his hands are the stars.

Couldn't agree with you more, I recently purchased a DVD " The Guitar Style of Richie Havens" (Another truly gifted musician) to try and find out more about his strumming patterns and technique and it has helped so much about the understanding of his guitar playing and music. I reckon if we start a petition it might happen!

Way to go, Goofus! That is exactly what Arlo-style-wanna-bes-is-u-n-mes should see. Bass string tuned to D, walking bass, slides and chord changes with sixths, tap and rhythm. You can learn a lot of songs from this pattern. Guitar orchestra in D. Tunings. Love 'em. Have to dedicate an axe to the Donovan, Joni and David Crosby approaches to that. Stills took it to the limit.

Perfect! And a little noisy too. Live in a room writing a song is. Then stage. Then recording. Or maybe not.

"harmonica tablature "

Check out http://www.harptabs.com there's a couple of songs there.

'Course a lot of Arlo's songs are available here in sheet music form. I've tabbed "Highway in the Wind", "The Motorcycle Song", and "Movin' On" from the sheet music.

Thanks Pulp I checked out the site. Not brought the harp out yet to try the songs but it looks fairly simple :? . I only started learning the harp a about a month ago due to the fact that I cant sing so thought it would go better along with the guitar than my voice  All I need to do is get my coordination together(which might take some time).
Would it be possible to put the songs that you have tabbed onto this site? It would be much appreciated not just by me but to all the Arlo fans out there. Cheers

Len, My take on reading harmonica tabs is this.

The numbers above the lyrics are the holes you either blow or suck, if it is just the number, you blow and if there is a minus sign (-) before it you suck. (easy :D ) I havent studied the more intricate ways of playing having just started out but once you get a feel for the tune I have found it comes pretty naturally. Other tabs I have seen have up & down arrows above the numbers ie:-

^ ^ \/ ^ ^ ^ ^ \/ ^ \/ \/ ^ \/ ^ ^
6 6 6 5 5 4 6 5 5 6 6 6 4 5 6

Basically up arrow is blow and down arrow is suck. Hope this helps.

I hope I am right with this or I will be learning for a long long time :D .

Cheers

Thanks Gordo. Easy.

I wonder if there are notation conventions for bends and tonguing and other style acoutrement.

With all that blowing, sucking, bending and tonguing going on, I think I'll need a license and a parson to play harp. 8)

Not being picky here, but could we possibly use the word "draw" as opposed to "suck". :P

The trouble with the stuff on harptabs is if you don't know the melody you're pretty much stuck. On the other hand, if you do know the melody, then your halfway there.

It may take me awhile, but I'll try to tab the AG songs I know and post them on harptabs. I'll let you know.

Another site is http://www.harpinanawhinin.com/ by Mark Puritan. He has midi files that play the song, so that gives you a chance to play with background music.

Finally, go to youtube and do a search for "blackpowderpulp". The idiot in the raggedy cowboy hat playin' a harp is me. Be warned, I have a lot of videos of my other favorite pastime (shooting Old West firearms)posted there also. If you're a member of the Brady gang you might be offended.

OK, I just tabbed "The Motorcycle Song" over on harptabs. This is just the melody, you'll have to figger out the licks and riffs on you own.

Note to the moderators: If what I just did is illegal, please let me know and I'll remove the song. Please don't sick Officer Obie on me.

Ok, but if someone says "draw", which hobby do you reach for first?

Thanks for the links!

There are conventions for guitar tab accents, bends, etc., but they are weak too. In the folk arts, leaving room for the player is demanded.

Pulp, thanks for posting "the motorcycle song" on harptab, much appreciated. I checked out your you tube vids, thats some trigger action going on, great harp playing aswell. Sorry about the suck instead of draw thing, I knew it didnt sound quite right when I was posting.

Len, If only we were all born with a double jointed tongue this would all be so easy  .
