Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God'
Associated Press
September 03, 2008 8:39 PM EDT
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."

Palin asked the students to pray for the troops in Iraq, and noted that her eldest son, Track, was expected to be deployed there.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

A video of the speech was posted at the Wasilla Assembly of God's Web site before finding its way on to other sites on the Internet.

Palin told graduating students of the church's School of Ministry, "What I need to do is strike a deal with you guys." As they preached the love of Jesus throughout Alaska, she said, she'd work to implement God's will from the governor's office, including creating jobs by building a pipeline to bring North Slope natural gas to North American markets.

"God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

"I can do my job there in developing our natural resources and doing things like getting the roads paved and making sure our troopers have their cop cars and their uniforms and their guns, and making sure our public schools are funded," she added. "But really all of that stuff doesn't do any good if the people of Alaska's heart isn't right with God."

Palin attended the evangelical church from the time she was a teenager until 2002, the church said in a statement posted on its Web site. She has continued to attend special conferences and meetings there. Religious conservatives have welcomed her selection as John McCain's running mate.

The Assemblies of God, which claims nearly 3 million members, is one of the biggest Pentecostal groups in the U.S. Unlike most other Christians - including most evangelicals - Pentecostals believe in "baptism in the Holy Spirit." That can manifest itself through speaking in tongues, modern-day prophesy and faith healing. The Assemblies of God teaches that spirit baptism must be accompanied by speaking in tongues. Still, some churchgoers never have the experience.

I only heard snippets of Palins speech so far on the radio in the car but I'm home from work now and Lehrer will be on in about 30 mins. so I'll see it all.

The thing is "our" side needs to be careful. Sure stick it to them for insulting us all for thinking they can get the "women's vote" just cos she's a female.
But don't give her any of the gender shit that Hils got just because SHE was female. Stick to attacking her politics but leave gender out of it.

And I'm SURE (I certainly hope so) that in the debate Biden will give her heaps of trouble!! Some say she was picked so he will go a little easier on her cos she's a GAL! I say GO ATTACK DOG!! Give the BARRACUDA HEAPS! (but with manners of course)

Isn't that why McCain took her for vice p. To get female voters and to get the religious voters who just vote because the name of god is in it without reflecting what is behind it and without seeing the real insult of it.
In Germany we have a lot of smaller parties and two major parties, the CDU and the SPD. One means Christian Democratic Union and the other Socialdemocratic Party of Deutschland. My parents always vote for CDU because they are Christian people and without thinking if the things the party does are in the christian spirit or not they think they can't do no wrong since the word Christian is in the name while the other party is a little left and comes from the workers side out of the Union and socialist movement they are always suspicious. Even though both are not too different. They always put the things the parties do in that perspective, CDU is right, SPD is wrong. I think a lot of people are like that, a little suspicous of the candidate a little stranger to their believes, and when it comes to the decision, regardless how bad it was, they'll vote for the more familiar one. I hope that this election content will win.

We must never underestimate the power of ignorance. When Mclame picked the wicked witch of the west as his running mate, I was taken by surprise because of her lack of experience, troopergate, pregnant unwed daughter etc., but I shouldn't have been. I should have seen it coming, because it's right out of Karl Rove's playbook, the one he used to get dumbass reelected: when the going gets rough, make it look like the dems are running against God. This strategy brings forth the fundamentalist christian right, an extremely dedicated and vocal minority who actually look forward to the end of the world so they can have their second coming.....and I don't mean another orgasm!

most of what I heard last night... and certainly not all of it... was predictable...
though I was startled by the intensity of Gov. Palin's seemingly malicious fervor in her sarcastic and witty attacks... suppose all's fair in love and politics, but for a group of folks who are so rooted in the Bible and God's word, the level of hate is quite high...
and Gov. Palin certainly is a Queen Bee of launching attacks... unfortunately rancor, hate and fear have gotten us where we are today... and stirring up those fires is not helpful...to anyone...

it surprises me that fundamentalists voters/citizens aren't put off by this as it is not reflective of the Bible or Biblical teaching...

on the lighter side I was startled by her comparison of herself to a pit bull...

I hate to see the bulldogs get the bad rep. I have owned them all my life. Never had one that bit a person. They are the most trusting and loyal dogs that you will find. I was an ER nurse for fifteen years. The worst biters were chihuahuas, german shepards, and chows. And now you're comparing them to republicans. The breed is doomed.

I said "safer around a pack of pit-bulls". And compared to Palin, they're downright cuddley.

SO "AMERICAN" well, the stereotype anyway. People here just shake their heads.
They already can't believe Dubya was given a second term, they are dumfounded to think it could happen again. (as many of you here probably are) Even tho we THINK it won't happen...it might!! (I have plenty of room in my barn

Well we joked about my barn four years ago..............well we thought it was a joke. My guts are churning and will be for the next two months. From excitment but also from genuine fear and disbelief. I feel like I'm watching a cartoon or comedy skit when I see McSame/Palin. But then a cartoon character has been "running" the country for eight years!

My beloved watched the speeches with me and when I get cranky, like during Palin's, he says.........you I and all your friends don't think like the MASSES, people could easily fall for this fear mongering brainwashing AGAIN!!

I'm genuinely proud to be an American and equally an Aussie as my blood is from both and I'm a citizen of both. But if it happens again I'll be kind of ashamed of my birthland and disappointed at how the majority could be so gullible. The majority woke up here last year so I'm just hoping it will happen there also.

Palin tries to double-talk herself out of her "task from god" crap in an interview with media puppet Charlie Gibson, saying it was an Abraham Lincoln reference. Hopefully, it will still be up at this web addy:

I can't decide - is it merely flip-flopping or outright lies? Yeah, you're right; it's lies.
