Agreed Arlo has done a wonderful job with his kids (at least from a public perspective).

As for kids trying to NOT be in their parents' shadow, when I was in high school I wanted to do a summer-internship in the field of psychology. But my dad was 2nd in command of the City of Philadelphia Health Department which also controls the Mental Health units.

I interviewed with private clinics, private hospitals, private offices. I wasn't married and so my last name was still the same as my dad's. I couldn't exactly change it at the age of 16. After being asked, "Is Murray your father?" 4 or 5 times, I finally gave up looking for an internship.

I didn't want to be hired "because" of my father and at the same time, if I did get hired and screwed up, I didn't want it reflecting on him either.

I sympathized with those kids as I've "been there" in a very simplistic way. At least they are old enough to change their last names. That was my very first thought when I heard them talking about the problems of being recognized for what THEY can do... not what their parents already did.

After reading one of Janet's suggested reading on-line, about Arlo saying something to the fact, that EVERYONE has important people (relitives or just folks in thier lives) that hold signifacant meaning. You don't have to be a Dylan or an Everly or even a Guthrie to have them. Another words, thinking for yrs. someone was just a plain old Joe, and then later on (hopefully it's in the moment instead) ya realize this person has changed or altered your life. Making you what you are. The person you are, is greatly benefited by these types of individuals. Great inspiration, and I can think of many in my life growing up. EX. My Dad's brother (Uncle Mack)(photo of farm at arlo.zone) was as close to Grandpa Walton as one could get. Mack even resembled the actor who played him as well (Will Geer) in his ideals, and ways of thinking.

I couldn't help make the anology, of what trying to live up to siblings, is another form of living in the shadows. When your brother is Valedictorian (and it goes on & on) and your the class burn out (they sent me my diploma in the mail, afraid I'd show up on ACID and make a mockery of the whole school) it sort of follow's you around. I've outgrown that stereo-type over the yrs. but I cannot say it didn'tleave it's mark!!!!

Never look back! I'm glad I'm the person I am, as I sure wouldn't want to be somebody else. God's plan is a good one (I have high expectations) and he's not thru with me yet. I have a purpose & that's what counts. My new goal is to say off drugs, and be even a better person for it..

I thank Arlo for his inspiration, in helping me learn, it's better late than never....

Trying me best in north ny/rb.....

Wyld, thank you for pointing the way to that song--it's beautiful! I was so proud, Sunday night, watching "Singing in the Shadows," that you'd think I was a Guthrie. And in a teeny way, I am--we all are. It's all the Guthries' fault!

I can't pretend to know the Guthrie family the way you folks do. However I can say this ,,Arlo seems to have been a good role model for his children,,maybe sometimes thats the best we can do for our family
