This little critter was on the handrail outside the back door. Pleasantly surprised it sat still long enough for me to go get my camera and make a close approach.

that kinda reminds me of the time i took a 50X handheld microscope thing and held it to a congregation of light colored ants and wasn't mentally prepared for what i saw (you could see some of them look up) and startled flew backwards onto my ass. haha…

every little thing has it's place....

however if it had been me and it made one wrong move that place would have been under my shoe, looks like some sort of horse fly and those thing Bl**dy hurt when they bite.

the horseflies i have seen can be as big as japanese hornets

Yes, it's a robber fly. They are the terror of the insect world. I don't know of anyone ever being bitten by one, but I reckon if it wanted to it could.

Horseflies, on the other hand, will most assuredly bite people. They used to give us fits in the old swimming hole when I was a kid. One would be buzzing around your head, you'd dive underwater and swim to somewhere else, come up for air, and there he'd be. They will bring blood when they bite.
