Some years ago, they were going to build a large hadron collider south of dallas. The gummint bought up all the farms and ranches; moved people off the land their families had held since Texas was a republic, and then you should have heard the nutcases weigh in on how it would be the end of the world. They got it stopped, and part of the site was turned into a HUGE auto rracetrack. I think the latter is more likely to signal the end of the world than an atom-smasher.

What does the research say on the waist from that atom smasher? Its been 20 years since I even heard of that super collider.

Oh, heavens--no offense taken, Agnes! I just love this stuff (the spookiness of physics). I'll put my money on Stephen Hawking, who says that if tiny black holes are produced, they will just as instantly 'wink out.' And Leo, there's not the huge concern you have with nuclear fission; this is fusion, and the particles' demise produces energy; no nuclear waste. The Texas supercollider was never built, so the one at CERN is the first. There was some concern that the walls might eventually build up some radiation, but I read in Discover the other day that they've figured out how to prevent that. (Discover magazine is my monthly Science for Dummies fix.)

The CERN supercollider's going to "co-star" with Tom Hanks in Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, due out next May. If you liked reading The DaVinci Code, I highly recommend Angels & Demons. Brown wrote it first, with the same main character. Can't wait for the movie!

It sounds good that fusion might work. Its been talked about for decades.
Since we are all still here, it sounds like it might work. They had the same fear of the first BOMB test. I hope it works.

They haven't fired up the CERN supercollider yet. There was some sort of problem that delayed it a few months. So we still have a chance to be sucked into another universe. I agree with Kevin; the un-neutron bomb test is WAY over-due!

Shouldn't "they" put us on notice of what they are up too? (is that 2 spelt with one or 2 o's?

They do, but the press needs to report it, and they're too busy reporting on bad actors' pecadillos. So we have to dig for the information. If I hear anything, I'll let you know when we need to strap pillows to our heads. :) (It's one 'o,' said the laid-off editor.)

Can't we just duct tape around our windows and doors, then duck and cover?

mikey

Ceashel,
It will be tough to finish this book until I have really done something. But unless MG steps up... I'm looking for how to get story bonus without ever really doing anything of note. Its an underground kind of thing I have done, believe me.

Sucked into another universe... maybe that might be o.k.... or at least interesting.

Jim dragged the family to some huge collider site (The Fermi Lab in Illinois) a few years ago. He was all jazzed up about it, but after looking at a lot of plumbing and electrical cables and colorfully painted pipes of many sizes and a diagram of the huge ring, with circles and arrows and explanations about it I begged off and Jim and the kids walked off to see yet more colorfully painted pipes and plumbing, and more photos and diagrams of the ring. It was interesting to a point...if you're into that kind of thing.
