Hello all, good day to you. Here's a question that has been driving me crazy for days:
When did Arlo/did Arlo ever make a recording (maybe one of the live ones w/PSeeger) of Elizabeth Cotten's Freight Train? I have looked all over the inter-webs, Itunes, etc. and cannot find one. I am so sure I have heard him do the tune, can anyone help me? As an outside chance, it might have been Pete Seeger, not Arlo, but I can't find any record or recording of it by him either. Can find it by lots of others, lots of lovely renditions, but this is really driving me (down the tracks) crazy. Many, many thanks for any/all ideas. Peaceful day to you all.

That sounds like a question John C. should answer, but he's at Mickey's (and Simba's) house this week.

John C probably could answer that question better than me....
but i don't think that he has ever recorded Freight Train...

although I have heard him sing it live at the Church Concerts (Revivals).... if a train goes by on the nearby tracks he might just stop what he's singing and start the tune...

so perhaps someone on the Trading Post might be able to help... with a concert recording...

I don't think that Arlo ever recorded this song by himself. He did accompany Pete Seeger on the "Pete Seeger Arlo Guthrie Together Again" live album.

I was there for one of those moments a few years back. Priceless! :D

He was getting ready to start another song, and the train started to rumble by 100 feet from the church, and he looked up with the gleeming eyes of a five year old kid that just found something under the christmas tree and broke into "frieght train." It was a real zen moment. :D

I've heard him do it live in concert & he does a great job of it. As far as I know of he has never done it on any albums. It'd be nice if he did it on a future album tho... :)

Arlo did perform Freight Train this past July at the Church and it was awesome on guitar alone without any other instrument accompanists.

I think he sang it in Princeton last May.
found a cool video of the song sung by Elizabeth Cotten herself with a young Pete Seeger.

I heard Arlo playing a fantastic live version of 'Freight Train' last Wednesday on Bob Dylan's 'Theme Time Radio' program (XM station 2). Bob didn't say where it came from, but I'd like to know and hear it some more!

I play that song but I can't finger pick it. my friend richy plays lead, and fills in my holes. love that style of finger picking . just wish I was better at it....

i'm just learing 'dont think twice it's allright'... I found out, if I ditch the guitar pick, it comes more natural. something my instructor always does is hand me a guitar pick when I don't have one. but he's catching on, i can play some songs better without it...

Love the song she wrote. Elizebeth Cotten wrote some great songs, but her voice is kinda like chalk on a chalk board...

Heard a song I've been playin on satelite radio today, blew me away..... station called 'The Village' allot of Arlo, Tom Paxton, and really old traditional folk..

Song called "Mama Don't Allow"

I played it for my friends and they loved it... To hear it on the radio today, hearing a group play it, and sing it, with all the instrumentals was priceless... ha ah\\\

Mama don't allow no guitar pickin round here
Mamn don't allow no guitar pickin round here
Well I don't care what mama don't allow
Gonna pick my guitar anyhow
Mama don't allow no guitar picken oune here

Mama don't allow no cigar smokin round here
Mama don't allow no cigar smoking round here
Well I don't care what mama don't allow
gonna smoke my cigars anyhow
Mama don't allow no cigar smokin round here

Mama don't allow now ( & you just change the words whatever)
My friend had a ball with this old tune....

Funny stuff...

RB

Yeah RB, the Village really does play alot of great stuff. Lately they've been playing a bunch of Arlo, especially from the "32 cents" record with the Dillards, but Also some real oldies from his 70's records. Plus Tom Paxton, Pete, Mississippi John Hurt, Taj ......etc., etc. 8) ............Try checking this place out, you can literally create your own radio station(s)......anything you want to hear:
