I am wondering what this song is about. My mother and I have been debating different ideas. It is such a beautiful song.
Thanks, kelley

It's certainly one of my favorites, too. I think trying to ascribe "meaning" to it is like trying to figure out what your dreams mean. After all, it is basically a song/dream that just materialized for the folkslinger.

There is a theme of family squabbles and conflicts suggested by the lyrics, but the love imagery in the song overpowers any story for me. Maybe ADG will check in here, and tell us; after all, it was his dream!

To ask an artist to explain what he gave to the audience should be part of everybodys not-to-do-list, also yours Mikey! The artist communicates via his art.

Songs as such mean different things to different people ,learn to just enjoy them for what ever reason they mean to you.

This is supposed to be a direct quote:

Arlo Guthrie performed live in Springfield, Massachusetts on November 17, 2007. The indefatigable Emily Joy was there, and reports that he introduced "In My Darkest Hour" as follows:

"I don't usually write songs in my sleep.

There was one time, though. I was sleeping, and in my sleep I was dreaming, and in my dream somebody was singin' this song.

When I woke up, I wrote it down...and then I went back to sleep. And when I woke up again the next morning, there was this song sittin' there...and I didn't know if it was...my song, or what?

But then I thought, what the heck. It's my dream."
