Hello All,

I am writing this hoping to get some help. I am looking for a song for a father daughter dance at my wedding. My father is a big folk music guy and a huge Arlo fan -I grew up watching Alice's Restaurant on EVERY Thanksgiving morning (I have since continued this tradition), we have seen him live numerous times, Heck, I even named my Golden Retriever Arlo, but I digress...
I really want to use an Arlo song, or a Pete Seeger, Woody or any of the greats, but I am having trouble narrowing my search. I know the easiest would be to ask my dad, but I want the song to be a surprise. It would mean a lot to have a song that he appreciates, instead of the usual wedding playlists.
Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Oh In The Morning would be a lovely father/daughter dance.

Sailing Down This Golden River might work - I'm not sure it's danceable, but it has the nice father-daughter connection of Arlo doing it for years, then Sarah Lee doing it.

And for a really unconventional father/daughter dance - Massachusetts would be lovely. It invokes visions of home and belonging, so while it's not about a father/daughter relationship, it kind of fits.

What nortonkevin suggested. Also, "You Are The Song" from the "In Times Like These" album is a great wedding song though not specifically father-daughter.

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
And may you stay.. forever young.

Forever young, forever young,
May you stay.. forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong
And may you stay.. forever young.

Forever young, forever young,
May you stay.. forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung
And may you stay.. forever young.

Forever young, forever young
May you stay.. forever young. [Harp to fade out]

Dylan had four children between 1966-1969, including his youngest Jakob, who went on to front The Wallflowers. In 1974, he got back together with his original backing group The Band, and recorded Planet Waves, which included this uplifting message from a parent to a child. The song has endured as one of Dylan's classics.
Some of the many artists to cover this song include Joan Baez (1976), Diana Ross (1984), The Pretenders (1994), Susan Anton (2001) and Meat Loaf (2003). Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders said of the song: "It's got such a beautiful lyric. I just love it. He's the pride of our generation. The song is genius."
Dylan included two versions of this song on the Planet Waves album: a slow version followed by a more uptempo take labeled "Forever Young"

Alice's Restaurant was our happy uplifting strengthening song as we wore our black arm bands and marched, and one of my favorite recollections of Bob Dylan's was the story he told of travelling to Brooklyn? well very far in winter on foot...to ask the family how to find Arlo's father. He recounted walking around a snow crusted field and up to the Guthrie door only to find out Mrs. Guthrie was not home...but there was a young Arlo and I believe that was the first time they set eyes on each other. Bob spoke of seeing Arlo, very fondly.

and...
If You are not familiar with Cat Stevens now Jusuf Islam who has recently returned to writing and recording after years, there is a song played at many many weddings in the 70's by the guests! who had a different calling in life and/or did not know the connection you are blessed to have. I have found it at 32:03 minutes into the following link but start at the beginning... this album is well designed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq6tlxrQb4g Cat Stevens-Tea for the Tillerman [Full Album] 1970. The entire album is a MUST LISTEN. Haunting magical, loving pieces that may lead you to want to know more about the work of this unique artist who disappeared for so long and has now returned when we need him so. Below I include some links to familiarize yourself with Jusuf Islam/Cat Stevens a beloved musician of my generation. I was 18 in '72 but I do believe your father will know Cat Stevens and this is my wedding gift to you... a missing piece of the puzzle of the music of those times. Your father should know and be proud that you would make such a heartfelt request on his behalf here.
