I just watched this recounting of the events that gave rise to Woody's "1913 Massacre" song. Steve Earle sings it towards the end of the program. which will probably be reshown. Check your local listings.

Hi Mikey,

Checked out the a/m thread and then listened to Woody sing the related song on utube. Perhaps that song should be posted on your "RIP Nelson Mandela". Anyway Mikey we have got a real connection re those times. My wife's grandfather Capt. Christy Poole was involved in the 1913 Dublin Lock-out led by Jim Larkin and James Connolly. (These were 'Union men') Christy and his brothers joined the Irish Citizen Army, fought in the 1916 Easter Rising and Irish War of Independence. ( Christy and his brother Vincent also fought in the 'Boar War' South Africa as members of the British Army. There were even more ex-Brits in the ICA who helped train 'Connolly's Union Army' the ICA. The women, men and boys of this 'Working class' Irish Citizen Army were going out to fight in Easter 1916 no matter if no one else did and they fought until the surrender) Many died on all sides as well as many innocent civilians. May they all RIP no matter what their whatevers.
Times were even worse for many people following independence and in many ways the Labour movement was taken over by the respectable men in suits. Some might even say that right up until the present times their sacrifices and those of others were in vain re the 1916 Proclamation etc.
So in listening to Woody sing, (you Mikey), actually brought us back to those times which for many ordinary decent folk were hard, awful and very painful times. Thank you again and seasons greetings from across the wee pond to you and yours.

Peace and Goodwill to all nomatter your colour, class, creed or sexual orientation and maybe even give a 'stranger' a warm Irish hug from us. We hug you all!!
 :D :|
