I live near Greystone Park State Hospital, and this was in our local paper today. I had a very brief discussion with Nora at Arlo's Peekskill show a few weeks ago and she did tell me that they had an exhibit of Woody stuff for the residents. This music program was something in addition.

As it says in the one article, Woody got arrested for "aimless wandering" in 1956. Those Guthries get arrested for the strangest things. Arlo got a song out of his of course. I may have been responsible for Sarah Lee not having the same opportunity last summer. Sarah Lee and Johnny did a show in August of 2005 that was supposed to be held outdoors at greystone park, but was moved to a local hockey arena last minute due to weather threats. Being a member of a local folk org., I had volunteered for the show and met up with Sarah and Johnny well before the show and gave them a newspaper article with not only a story about the show an some woody/Greystone history, but a tabloid size photo of Sarah and Johnny. They had enough time before the gig to take the short ride over to Greystone to look around and seek out "the magic tree", a HUGE tree that Arlo remembers playing around when he was a kid visiting his dad. Anyway, it turns out that the campus police at Greystone don't take kindly to "Illegal magic tree lookin' at" or photography of magic trees. You would have to ask Sarah and Johnny for the exact details, but they were explaining to the cop who they were and why they were in the act of illegal magic tree lookin' at, and the cop may have not believed them. Until of course they produced the newspaper article with the full page photo of the both of them. I think they were released on the spot with just a warning. So, although I feel gratified that I may have helped Sarah and Johnny from getting locked up, I still feel I may have also helped to deny the world yet another Guthrie song about getting arrested.

The question occured to me that if somebody can get locked up for "aimless wandering", how come George W. Bush is still wandering around a free man? :?: :?

Good point adg. But many of us at least TRY to aim while we wonder or wander. But then again, I'm sure Dick Cheney tried to aim too........

Caught most of the documentary "Man in the Sand" while channel surfing last night. Interesting inside look at Nora Guthrie, Billy Bragg and Wilco during the creative and interactive process for "Mermaid Avenue". Also includes some historical stuff on Woody and a short visit by our favorite folkslinger. See it if you can!
