Here's a tribute from someone who knew him and recently spoke to him.

He and Tony Curtis had fine runs. And their work lasts. IMO, that is the best epitaph one can earn from of those of us who know only their work.

Arthur Penn is Arlo's friend so I hope Arlo won't mind if I plug that film "FOUR FRIENDS" a bit. It is an amazing film....subtle, quirky, audacious, lyrical, hilarious and utterly noncommercial ....and really does capture the sixties with only some of the usual cliches (and that's saying a LOT!)

It showed up on BRAVO when it was a great cable network (around 1996-7) and when Arthur was head of the Actor's Studio ("Inside the Actor's Studio" was an outstanding BRAVO feature) and I managed to catch it on video...and have watched it many times since.

I don't know why nobody talks about this film when they are discussing the work of Arthur Penn. Rent it at your local library and find out why some "sleepers" are the most beautiful dreamers of all.....!
